What does a college admissions consultant do?
A college admissions consultant (also known as a college counselor or college admissions coach) is a trained professional who advises students on creating the most competitive applications to the school of their dreams.

Do you offer college counseling online?
Absolutely! While we are based in the Boston area, we work with students and families all over the country—and the world.
We provide personalized online college counseling wherever you are. No matter if your child’s high school is public or private, IB or online, in Massachusetts, New York, California, Texas, Japan or anywhere, we will help you make a plan to maximize his or her high school experience, produce exceptional application materials, and gain acceptance to the best-fit school. Our online college counseling clients have the same level of success and report the same level of service satisfaction as our Boston-based clients.
Do you offer education consulting for international students?
Spark Admissions is committed to working with all students applying to American colleges and universities and U.S. private schools.
Our consultants have worked with numerous international students and are well-versed in the unique requirements of this process, as well as the specific concerns and questions that international students face when applying to U.S. schools. We frequently serve as education consultants for international students applying to American colleges (as both first-year and transfer students) and graduate programs.
Which college admissions consultant will I work with?

When should my child start working with a college admissions consultant?
We believe it’s never too early or too late for a student to begin strengthening his or her experiences that will be showcased in college applications.
On average, students begin with a college admissions consultant during sophomore year. However, many of our students begin in eighth or ninth grade, seeking guidance on navigating the entirety of high school. In addition, many come to Spark Admissions the summer before senior year for guidance specifically on the college application process and essays.
Do you offer tutoring services?
We know standardized testing is an important aspect of the admissions process, and we work with students to create the right testing plan for them.
While our full-time Spark Admissions counselors do not provide tutoring services themselves, we do have several tutors with whom we partner. These tutors are all closely vetted, trained, and managed to ensure a seamless fit. They work closely with our admissions counselors to help students achieve their goals and minimize stress. In addition, we help students decide which test to take and when to take it and provide advice on finding effective study resources.
Do you only work with students applying to Ivy League and other top-ranked schools?
Not at all. We pride ourselves on finding the best fit for each individual student.
Spark Admissions consultants work with students of all academic backgrounds to help them get into the right college for them. And, when students don’t know yet what type of school is right for them, we help them explore and understand their options to make the best personal choice.
While many of our students aim for Ivy League and other highly ranked schools, several apply to liberal arts colleges, state universities, or other institutions, such as art, film, or music schools or BS/MD programs. In addition, we work with a large percentage of students with learning differences, including ADHD, dyslexia, or executive functioning challenges.

College Transfer FAQs
Do colleges convert your GPA?
Yes, most colleges recalculate your GPA when reviewing your transfer application. Schools may weigh certain courses differently or convert grading scales to match their system. This means your GPA might look slightly different at each institution.
Does your undergraduate GPA matter when you transfer?
Absolutely. Transfer admissions officers pay close attention to your college GPA because it demonstrates how you perform in a higher education setting. A strong upward trend can be just as valuable as a consistently high GPA.
Does GPA carry over each year?
No—your GPA resets when you transfer. Your new school calculates GPA based only on courses completed there, though your transfer GPA will still influence admissions decisions.
Can you apply as a transfer through the Common Application?
Typically, yes. The Common App has a dedicated platform for transfer applications that many colleges accept. It allows you to submit materials, essays, and recommendations through one system.
What are Common Application transfer deadlines?
Transfer deadlines vary, but many schools accept spring transfers (October–November deadlines) and fall transfers (March–May deadlines). Missing a deadline can delay your transfer by a full semester or, at some schools, a year.
What GPA is needed for transferring?
It depends on the college. Some highly selective schools may expect a 3.7+, while other institutions may admit transfer applicants with GPAs in the 3.0–3.3 range.
Why can't I submit my transfer application?
Submission problems can arise if you miss required fields, attempt to submit after a deadline has already passed, or encounter technical issues. Each college also has its own supplemental requirements that may need to be completed first.
What is transfer articulation?
Transfer articulation agreements outline how credits earned at one institution transfer to another. These are common between community colleges and four-year universities.
What are the steps to transferring?
Typically, the 5 steps are: 1. researching schools, 2. reviewing transfer requirements, 3. preparing your application materials, 4. submitting applications, and 5. enrolling at your new institution.
How accurate is Transferology?
Transferology is a useful tool for checking credit transfers, but it may not be 100% accurate for all institutions or majors. Always confirm with admissions counselors.
Are you guaranteed a transfer with a major articulation agreement?
No. Articulation agreements guarantee credit acceptance, but admission is never automatic. You must still meet academic and application requirements.
How late into college can you transfer?
Most colleges allow transfers until junior year, though transferring too late may mean losing credits or extending graduation time.
How late is too late to change colleges?
Changing colleges after junior year is usually discouraged unless absolutely necessary. By then, you may face lost credits or delayed graduation.
Should I transfer colleges if I'm unhappy?
If you feel your current school isn’t a strong fit for your academic goals, social needs, or career path, transferring can provide a fresh start. The key is ensuring that your new school will be the right match.
What are valid reasons to transfer colleges?
Common reasons include wanting stronger academics, pursuing a specific major, seeking greater financial aid, or finding a more inclusive campus community. Regardless, admissions officers will want to see a clear, thoughtful explanation for the change in your essays.
